01. Introduction

This is a free 3D model of Pharah from Overwatch for Blender 3.0 and it's a followup to the previous model I made which, despite being quite great overall, had one major limitation: importing outfits.

There was no way to automatically import them and adding an outfit manually would throw you into weight painting hell (and forget about making it work with the bodymorphs). Rigging outfits was a chore I wanted to get away from and Daz Studio seemed to be the way to go. I wanted the simplest way of importing outfits (both for myself and people using the model) and there were two ways of doing it: the official Daz to Blender Bridge or Diffeomorphic .

Using Diffeomorphic looked like a more laborious and complicated process and after trying out the Daz to Blender bridge, it seemed like it was a solid choice. Fast forward many months and I released a new version of the Pharah model with a guide for importing outfits which also worked with bodymorphs. Although it felt like I was close to reaching the initial goal, I also started having second thoughts about the choice I had made with the Daz to Blender bridge. For one the rig had some limitations and posing the shoulders was a pain in the ass.

In addition to that importing poses from Daz did not work, and the auto-generated shaders were pretty crap and lot of time you'd need to tweak them. What really gave me the biggest second thoughts though was the community behind it. The Daz bridge seemed pretty much abandoned while Diffeomorphic, which was already way more powerful to begin with (even if harder to use), had a very active and thriving community (at the time of writing this the Daz to Blender Bridge has been updated 10 months ago , while Diffeomorphic was updated yesterday ).

And so I bit the bullet and changed the direction, dropping all the progress I had up to that point. I started almost from scratch as I redid the facemorph and tweaked the textures some more. I also took a detour first and make the model available for Daz Studio , which has proved quite successful . After that I got back on track, became more familiar with Diffeomorphic and I've been happy with the decision ever since and even though it might be intimidating for new users, I think that the guide I made will help you overcome that.

04. user guide

This guide will take you through the basics of using the model but assumes you have beginner level understanding of working with DAZ.

3.1  importing the model to a separate scene

To import this model to a separate scene you will need to append the entire collection.
In your new scene go to File → Append …→ Pharah v5.x.xx.blend → Collection → Pharah v5

You might get some wire shapes added to the Scene. Select those and hide or delete them.

Lastly, save the scene and then re-open it. This will add the custom UI (Pharah v5 panel in the viewport).

3.2  importing outfits

Being able to easily import outfits was the main reason to make this new model.
I’ve set up a straightforward guide that will take you through the process of setting up DAZ Studio and the Diffeomorphic add-on to easily export outfits from DAZ and import them into Blender.

Once you’re familiar with the process you should be able to import outfits and have them ready to go (rigged, shaded and working with bodymorphs) in under 5 minutes.

Read the guide

3.3  importing poses

Another benefit of using the Diffeomorphic plugin is that it makes it easy to import Poses from DAZ Studio

Once you’re familiar with the process and have the temp .blend file saved you should be able to import poses in under one minute minutes.

Read the guide

3.4  pose library

This model comes with a collection of poses for the full body, hands and facial expressions. These are available within Blender 3.0 Asset Browser.

To make use of them you will first need to enable the Pose Library add-on that comes with Blender. To do that and see how to use it you can follow this short guide which summarizes it really well.

3.5  lewd animations

For lewd animations you can use the following:

  • breasts bones and shapekeys
  • genitalia bones and shapekeys
  • glutes shapekeys

The shapekeys are available under the Bodymorph → Lewd shapekeys panel.

3.6  weird dark hair tips

In Cycles, you might get some weird looking dark hair tips, especially noticeable in the blonde Karla hairdo. To reduce these artefacts you should change the following setting: Scene → Light paths → Max bounces and increase the Transparent value to around 24 or more.

3.7  Posing issues

Before the v3.5 update there were two problems when posing the elbows and knees.

  • When posing the elbow, the palm would be moving

  • When using some of the poses from the library, the elbows / knees posing would break

For the first problem, the initial solution was to enable Arm Stretchiness in the MHX addon. This seemed to solve the issue and the palm would no longer move when posing the breast. However, this would also mean that in some situations the forearms would get stretched or squashed, looking messed up. The solution I ended up with is removing the stretchiness and disabling the Limits under IK and FK limits option in the MHX addon.

The second problem would happen after using the poses from the Poses library and the end result would be the knees bones being rotated the wrong way or the elbow bones being offset. The easiest way to know if this happened was to select all the bones, reset their position and scale, and then instead of the body being in the proper A pose the elbows would still be bent.

Apparently the problem here was how the poses were imported, so I re-imported almost all of them and made sure the bones were rotated properly. Despite that, if somehow this still happens or if I missed this problem on one of the existing poses, the solution lies again in the MHX addon. In this case, pressing the Enforce limits button in the MHX addon will fix the issue.

05. changelog

v5.3.45 (05 JUN 2023) + -

This started as a collection of smaller updates and ended up snowballing into the biggest update since the release of the v5 model. I also took this opportunity to request and incorporate user feedback. Unlike previous versions, I also decided to incorporate user feedback earlier on and such I released a preview version to a handful of people will to try it.

New features:

  • Outfits colors selector - change the color of the various outfit items by choosing from a list of presets (preview)

Background: I wanted the option to change the color of the outfit items. At the same time I wanted to have some control over those colors to avoid the result being a visual clusterfuck. A dropdown seemed like a good solution but I was not able to get custom icons to consistently work so I couldn’t define the colors. As luck would have it, Blender comes with a nice selection of icons, including some colored ones, so they were a decent workaround, despite the fact that they were quite limited in terms of colors. I released that as part of the preview version of the new model. I got feedback from @GRVTY3D that some of the colors were too vibrant and that more variations (maybe more pastel colors) would be welcomed. I knew he was right as I felt the exact same way so this was the metaphorical kick in the butt that I needed to scrap the whole approach and go back to the drawing board. Since dropdowns didn’t seem to be the solution I was pretty much out of ideas, but luckily I had been playing with image selectors recently and that ended up being the absolute perfect solution, as they work very similar to a dropdown but provide way more control.

  • Outfits combos selector - easily switch between 20+ outfit combinations. (preview)

Background: in retrospect this should have been an obvious one, but in practice it took way too long to get here. One of the main benefits of the Pharah model has always been that you could combine various outfit items (tops, bottoms, shoes, etc) to come up with interesting combos. The problem was that most people were not aware or simply didn’t bother with it. I wanted to let the users know about the possibilities that come with this model so my plan was to just add a button in the UI, linking to the website and showing all the cool combos that could be achieved. Thankfully, I resisted my reflex and I realized that I should just skip the middleman and add this directly in the model. The end result is something that is super easy to use yet powerful, which also plays nicely with the newly introduced color options. I expect more combos to be added in the near future.

  • New outfit items - pantyhose (with 6 variations), knee-high boots, bunnysuit outfit, gym shirt, sweater, office shirt, a new sports bra, lingerie top, 3 headwear pieces (sports, dominatrix and lieutenant caps), new chokers and earrings

  • New hairdos and selector - 7 new hairdos and an easy to use selector (preview)

  • Material variations - some of the outfits come with material variations as well, such as latex (provied by CableNsfw) or the nylon for the thigh-high stockings.

  • Bones for lewds - added bones to control the vagina and butt (preview)

  • Misc - piercings, a skin tone slider

  • New poses - more facial expressions and poses added to the Asset browser, with over 700 items in total

  • Improved face texture - removed some of the sharpness noticeable on her nose and redid that part of the textures (thanks to @blankpins)

  • Improved UI - to make things more organized and the UIlayout more compact

  • Baked the MHX rig - the MHX addon is no longer needed to use the model (although it still allows for customizing the rig options such as FK/IK switch)

  • Simplified body morphs - removed some of the bodymorphs that were rarely used or made little difference; removed the various muscles morphs and added fewer muscle morphs covering arms, legs, torso and back (which is new). Added some new breasts morphs as well. Overall the number of morphs was reduced by 70

  • Buttons to disable items for improved performance - hide the hair, outfit or pJCM bodymorphs with a single click, for extra performance (especially useful when animating)

Fixes and improvements:

  • Fixed knees / elbows posing issue (more details)

  • Fixed problem with sculpting having a 2 second delay - this was caused by a duplicate of the body mesh, used for the alternative Bodysuit outfit (which was removed in this update)

  • Improved performance by removing the DAZ teeth mask - masks still seem to cause performance issues in Blender so I removed the mask and used a morph instead to hide the teeth

  • Eliminated the random freezing that would happen from time to time when posing, by baking the MHX rig

  • Increased pelvis bone rotation limit - this is useful in some animations (thanks to @ITAlessio27)

  • Lots of other smaller fixes

Thanks to:

  • Fixed eyebrows floating a bit above the face for some poses (reported by@blankpins)

  • Fixed tanlines UI breaking after going out of bounds (reported by Klopparberg)

  • Added “Angela’s Property” tattoo as another body option (requested by Klopparberg)

  • Added Overwatch 2 skin - This includes the default armor, new hairdo and teeth. The armor comes with two additional color variations. (preview)

  • Added zero-suit - This complements the armor well but works as a standalone item or combined with other outfits. It comes in 3 material variations and includes torn options, for lewd. (preview)

  • Improved poses library - I re-did the thumbnails for all the poses to color code them and group them visually. I also added a bunch of new poses, including better facial poses. (preview)

  • Changed the knee-high boots - the older ones didn’t work so well with some of the outfits, so I ported the boots from the v4 model as a replacement (preview)

  • Redid the face options - I added the variations as overlays instead of separate textures. Redid all the options and added some new ones such as smudged lipstick. (preview)

  • Added color variations - the sports lingerie now comes with Blacked/Bleached options as well. The bodysuits also have color variations so that they fit better with the armor

  • Changed diffuse textures from JPG tp PNG and adjusted the face ones (suggested by @blankpins)

  • Fixed some busted vertices for the pregnant shapekey (reported by imh0ll0w)

  • It’s now possible to use just the bottom tanlines (reported by Klopparberg)

  • Fixed issues with some materials not looking properly (reported by @GRVTY3D)

This update aims to improve the default hairdo (both the mesh one and particle based version).

  • Re-did the default hairdo. In the old one the hair cards always had a visible hard edge so I used some different textures and re-did the UV map to add some transparency to the edges. I also changed the braids from the hair accessories so they look like actual braids with proper geometry. (before | after)

  • Re-did the particles based hairdo. Although the original particles based hair from @Brownie-Ari looked amazing, it was slightly off from the original mesh model so I kept the hair accessories that Brownie-Ari made but redid the hair from scratch to get it closer to the in-game model. (before | after)

  • Added posing options for the particles based hair. There are now 4 shapekeys to control the posing for the particles based hair, which should make it more usable in various poses or animations.

  • Set the in-game teeth as default - I accidentally set the DAZ ones as the default in the past update, which is the wrong choice

  • Added poses library with a collection of poses for the body and hands plus facial expression, based on the Blender 3.0’s asset browser (preview)
  • Added backpack and gun holsters (preview)
  • Changed the sports top to a nicer looking version with more color variations (preview)
  • Changed the combat shorts to a more slim version (preview)
  • Added socks (preview)
  • Added earrings (preview)
  • Added a new bush (preview)
  • Added handgun and rocket launcher (preview)
  • Added colored nails as an option

  • Removed some invalid drivers (thanks @Mustard)
  • Removed some unused assets (thanks @crute)

  • Added fur coat and new materials for the dominatrix outfit (preview)
  • Updated the face texture to get it closer to the in-game model (before | after)

  • Fixed some hairdos and outfits not following the rig (thanks to @blankpins)

  • Changed the default nodes in the compositor (rendering will no longer show a “white image”)
  • Fixed body options not having the anubis tattoo (thanks to @ShadowBoxer3D)
  • Fixed some hairdos' vertices not following the rig (thanks to @blankpins
  • Fixed tongue material being too dark

Released the v5.1 version based on Diffeomorphic.

What’s new compared to the previous v5.0 Pharah model (which used the Daz to Blender bridge)

  • added MHX rig - now you can finally pose the shoulders properly :)
  • improved face geometry and materials
  • added lots of new outfits
  • added an improved UI to customize the model
  • added face and body options
  • added particle based pubes
  • added genitalia controls
  • added version checker (click a button in the UI to check if a new version was released)

  • fixed tongue having wrong material
  • fixed underwear outfit not being rigged properly

  • improved the face geometry and materials to be closer to the orignal model (preview)
  • fixed the Partial Joint Controlled Morphs (pJCM) (preview)
  • improved the skin color (thanks to @Rentegra)

  • initial v5 model release with no documentation, one hairdo, some outfits and bodymorphs that work with the clothes
